The Study of the First Complete Denture Use Age During a 10 Year Period in Iran : A Cross-sectional Study

Introduction  Becoming completely edentulous is a major concern of dentists and other health care providers. It mostly targets aged population and has numerous comorbidities. An old-fashion but currently used treatment plan for edentulism is complete denture. We aimed to investigate the time when our elderlies are in need of complete dentures and what are the reasons of tooth loss in our country. Methods and materials  200 patients’ registration files were collected from Shahid Heidary dental clinic and was studied by details. Patients were completely edentulous and treated with complete dentures for the first time. Data on systemic factors, periodontitis and smoking was analyzed. P<0.05 was considered as significant difference. Results  the mean age of edentulism was measured 52.1±1.07. Most populated age group was 55-60 and 45-50 years. Systemic disease and periodontitis was reported more in patients younger than mean age, While smoking patients were mainly older than 52. Conclusion  It was understood that the mean age of edentulism is significantly lower than other countries and more investigations are required to assess the current situation of edentulism. We also suggest that an enhanced dental care for aged population is needed.
